	On first reading, the article

struck me as unfairly written to support the positions of
Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility and to attack
defense, not much caring about whether the science of artificial
intelligence was correctly described or not. On second reading,
all this still seemed true, but something else struck me as more
important. The article depicted the people at ADS writing proposals
for research in AI as clowns, not caring whether their research
would actually help the Strategic Defense Initiative. I don't know
the people involved, except for the President of the company who
declined to be interviewed, but I fear that the clown picture may
be correct and even representative of many people doing defense
research.

If the picture is correct, we are in more danger than I
previously thought and will have to spend even more money on
defense. Namely, it appears that contractors will have to be
more closely supervised to be sure that they don't waste defense
money.
